From the brand's illustrious history, here's a captivating journey that spans over 130 years:
In 1892, at the young age of 27, Albert H. Weinbrenner teamed up with partner Joseph Peffer to open a cobblery in Milwaukee, serving the "Jobbing" trades. This marked the humble beginnings of what would become a renowned footwear company.
By 1900, the Albert H. Weinbrenner Co. was formally established. In 1916, the company printed its first catalog, boasting more leather cutting machines than any other in the U.S. The revolutionary "Job-fitted" concept was introduced in 1917, and Weinbrenner became a major contributor of boots to the U.S. Army during World War I.
Weinbrenner took its first steps into safety footwear production in 1938, and in 1942, the company celebrated its 50th anniversary by converting its entire operation to military footwear for the duration of World War II, producing both combat and dress styles. These military-inspired designs also gained popularity among civilians.
In 1943, the company's workers organized under the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union, but the management and workers maintained an outstanding relationship that continues to this day. 1964 saw the introduction of the iconic "Hike n' Camp" boot, the company's best-selling model that is still available today in its original design.
The company was purchased by a local group including six employees in 1988, leading to the creation of the "ThoroGard" division featuring high-tech occupational safety footwear. Weinbrenner celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1992 with the theme "A Century of Lasting Quality."
In 2000, Weinbrenner employees took ownership of the company through an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Following the 9/11 attacks in 2001, the company donated 500 pairs of durable work boots to Ground Zero workers. The 1892 Heritage line of handcrafted, lifestyle boots was introduced in 2014.
Today, Weinbrenner, now known as Thorogood, celebrates its 130th anniversary, having opened a new factory in Merrill, WI, and launched its first Western wear product, the Square Toe Wellingtons. As the brand continues to evolve and expand, its unwavering commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and American heritage remains a testament to its enduring legacy.
